Digital Migration & Hub and Spoke

Hey folks, so I get the feeling that we're kinda sorta moving on over (moving on up!) to wordpress. The Dance Team: Chicago Squad has got some new posts about their upcoming performance, Hub and Spoke, at the Chicago Fringe Festival next week. And not just words, pictures!

So check out the new clubhouse at:

Go, Team! Miss you, Brooklyn.

Coming Together 2

It has been 2 years since last I posted, and a lot has happened since then. The Dance Team has reproduced, and now exists in Brooklyn and New York in addition to Chicago. This is neat. In Chicago, TDT is creating an evening length piece to perform in the Chicago Fringe Festival. The piece is called Hub and Spoke and I know little about it, save that it will be great and the costumes make me smile. Look forward to a post by Chris with more about the Chicagoans' doings.

Meanwhile, back in Brooklyn...

Coming Together 2 is under way. A whole new set of people so far, and a whole new set of things to explore. So far there has been a weird and satisfying emphasis on tumbling and little tricks and such. We are now 'proficient' in Aikido rolls, to say the least. We are meeting every Wednesday morning at Cooper Park in East Williamsburg at 8am. I'm taking on a little more of an explicit leader roll at the moment, but hope to crack open a can of Democracy soon enough. My ethics have gotten fuzzy since moving to NYC, but I am excited to get back down to anti-business in the most fun way possible. Hope y'all can join me as we get our feet back on solid ground. With all the sloppy love of teenagers making out for the first time,

BONEYARD

Hello Folks!

We are doing three (3) performances at the Boneyard Arts Festival in Champaign on Thursday April 16th. We have three segments, 3:30-4, 5-:530, and 6:30-7. to use the space at the corner of Neil and Main (in front of Guidos).

From 3:30-4 will be a version of "idon'twannabedefeated X 1000," which we are performing in New York on the 11th.

One of the others will be a ****10 minute**** group improvisation in which anyone may participate, just so long as they let us know (preferably by posting on The Dance Team's Facebook wall) by the day of the performance. There will be a score, and it will be a performance, not a jam. Both are cool, but they're different, and this one is the former, not the latter.

One will be a piece put together via the internets (mainly this blog). The idea is a process of decentralized authorship. Again this piece is open to all interested parties for participation, but you MUST DECLARE YOUR PARTICIPATION by APRIL 1ST at 11:59PM. The way it's going to happen is as follows:

Post a COMMENT to THIS POST by APRIL 1ST at 11:59PM. The comment should include YOUR NAME and the TITLE ONLY of a RANDOM WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE. Then everyone who has posted will vote on ONE and ONLY ONE of the articles. We will then make a work that uses that article as a jumping off point. You do not need to be in the performance, so satellite participation is possible, but the final product must include an element of live performance to be presented at Boneyard on the 16th. ****We have the space for 10 minutes.**** cheers, friends.

-love,

steve

Updating Together

Here are updates for Coming Together:

We have had the first two legit sessions. They were both wonderful. We now have 879 team spirit points, well on our way to our goal of over 9000 points. Well, how did we get here?

Session one on January 11, 2009 we got points as follows:

160 for attendance:
Chloe + 20
Kang + 10
Julia + 20
Zach + 10
Mike + 10
Al + 10
Marissa + 20
Steve + 10
Emily + 10
Lesley + 20
Jess + 20

15 for washing our feet, and Al and Jess not needing to because they are in love already and don't need to wash each others' feet before they touch them.

20 for trust flying

2 for Blue team vs. Red Team (went well, but there's a lot of room for growth)

10 for having first legit session

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS

2 for Mike for Gorilla Knucks
2 for Kang for Facing his ticklishness
3 for Toby (the cat) and our growing relationship with him

TOTAL: 214
RUNNING TOTAL: 619

Session two on January 18, 2009 we got points as following:

70 for attendance:
Kate + 10
Mike + 10
Al + 10
Lesley + 10
Marissa + 10
Jess + 10
Steve + 10

75 for a genuine laughing circle, and the evolution of that into other things

20 points for going through learning how to walk. It was not legit BMC because it was spur of the moment and I (steve) didn't remember exactly the process, but it got us up to walking, which was great. Marissa will get more involved with Body Mind Centering activities in later sessions, to the benefit of all.

35 for Al's Walking Magnets exercise, and bouncing

20 for Accumulation: the Accumulation is a sequence which we will build on. for every level we reach for the day, we will get X10 points. so today we got to level 2, so we got 20 points.

28 (14 X 2) for Extreme Value Composition exercise. (X 2 because it was buy one get one free for pistachio's at Jewel)

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS

2 for Marissa for being involved and leading our party during the accumulation
10 for Mike for the accumulation being his first "Dance Class" experience

TOTAL: 260
RUNNING TOTAL: 879

MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have developed a "lock box" system. Ok, so it's actually an Iron Man slurpee mug from 7-11. But it functions as a lock box. The new idea is for sessions to be $5 or however much you can pay (as opposed to the splitting the cost evenly idea). Money goes either directly to the people who run the space we are renting, or into the "lock box" fund. This fund will be used to pay in advance for space rental (because usually you need to pay at least a little in advance). This fund will also be used for setting up a fundraiser, eventually. And the money from that fundraiser will, likewise, go into this fund. Once we have enough money consistently in the fund, I (Steve) or a Treasurer, should anyone want to volunteer, will open a real bank account for The Dance Team. Then after a year maybe we can apply for 501(c)(3)?

Coming Together

me: do you have a special version of mac and cheese that you call
Kate: mmm
me: MACilvain and cheese?
Kate: of course
no i wish
me: you should get going on that
Kate: i absolutely should
Sent at 4:12 PM on Monday
me: word
i wanna start working on a new thing
Sent at 4:15 PM on Monday
me: but i wanna do it where we just get a crew together and have team practice, but don't really worry about making anything for a while. and then once we've worked up enough team-spirit, make something out of control awesome
Kate: i'm in
when would we meet
and where
me: them's the questions
it would be nice to work in a relatively large, versatile, durable space.
like outside would be nice, but it's kinda cold
and also, i think a consistent time would be awesome, but location could be more flexible
Kate: yes its freakin' freezing out here
me: do we know how much $$$ it was for galaxie?
place was alright, not amazing, but alright
Kate: galaxie is 15 an hour
not bad
and pretty big
me: right right
and if a)we all pitched in or b) we had a fundraiser or c)both, it would be very doable
Kate: i would happily pitch in
for that
Sent at 4:21 PM on Monday
me: me too
i guess questions are
who else would be in that could consistently come?
would they be willing to $$$ a little
?
Kate: i know i would
tess
probably
maggie koller
probably
me: emily braun
probably
Kate: right
me: some of those columbia folks
probably
mike and al
dan?
Kate: right
ooh
probably
me: right on right on
some of the happydog people
maybe
Kate: next thing you know you're at like .75 per person per rehearsal
who wouldnt pay that?
me: seriously
15 folks means 1$!$!$!$ per hour
that's cheaper than western springs dodgeball
Kate: seriously
me: ok
so how about some calendar work here
Kate: okay
yeah
let's do it
me: do you have a regularly available time or times during the week
Kate: sundays are usually wide open for me
as well as monday evenings
and most evenings
i can be available
me: sundays are probably pretty available for people
and one weekday would be pretty rad too
Kate: right
sunday and thursday or soemthing
me: i think sunday like 11-2 or 3
what does "evening" mean for you?
Kate: umm
at galaxie
i could do as early as 6
but others might think 7 would be beter
better or later
me: what if it was 6-9, and it wasn't a big deal if people came at 7?
Kate: or just 7-9
so no one misses anything
me: 2 hours not long enough!!! ROAR!!!
( i have a thing about at least 3 hours)
Kate: then 6-9 it is!
:)
me: OR
6:30-9:30
???
:D
Kate: that would be good
give people
time
me: and not end at 10
Kate: yeah
i like that
i do hate ending at 10
me: freal
Sent at 4:34 PM on Monday
me: ok i like this
i need to work a ton through the holidays as defined by until jan 10th, but after that i will be more opener
although i'll also need a 2nd job then
Kate: right
me: but
how about
Kate: too bad you're not a girl
you could sell lia sophia
me: cursed discrimination
cursed rod and balls
Kate: curse it steve
curse it
me: curse...sieve
B-)
but i digress
so how about this
Sent at 4:38 PM on Monday
me: regularly scheduled programming begins sunday, Jan 11
Sent at 4:39 PM on Monday
me: we have at least 2, preferably 3 sessions before then
Sent at 4:40 PM on Monday
Kate: right
well wait
is galaxie available at those times?
Sent at 4:43 PM on Monday
Kate: or do you just want to have the time, and worry about space later?
me: worry about space later
Kate: then yeah
that sounds good
me: ok
and
just to see how it goes
i think i am going to knock off the pretending i'm not the leader thing
and actually be a director
Kate: steve that's good
people need directions
from someone
me: and then if anyone has any bright ideas and wants to lead a session, they are more than welcome to
but otherwise
i'm just gonna do it
Kate: yes steve
lead
lead
i think that sounds great though
me: here everybody!
follow me!
(bagpipes and marching)
Kate: and i think people wouldn't mind paying like $6 a week to have a space
for rehearsing
and making something
with people they like
me: probably not
Kate: and who knows, maybe we could find someplace cheaper than galaxie
me: like link's hall
Kate: right
smaller space
shittier parking
me: or a large apartment if someone has one
Kate: but cheaper space
me: like happydog once the floor gets fixed (it got broke)
anyhow i'm going to send out an email right now
Kate: right
me: the project is called
coming...together
or just
coming together
Sent at 4:50 PM on Monday
Kate: or
cumming together?
ew
sorry
gross
me: haha that's funny
see what you did here
was take something implicit
that we were saying
and you actually went there
and made it explicit
Kate: thanks
will you be sending out a big email about the convo we just had
me: yeah
Kate: or maybe just copying this convo
me: i like that too
Kate: and pasting it into the body of the email
me: in fact i prefer that
Kate: you might need to summarize though
me: i will
should i do the summary as an attachment?
so the body of the email isn't too overwhelming
Kate: i think that would be a good idea
Sent at 4:55 PM on Monday
me: me too
Sent at 4:56 PM on Monday
me: oh
john clark
Kate: right
zoe
me: right
team saic
Kate: right
Sent at 5:00 PM on Monday
Kate: becky?
right?
me: oh fo sho
lesley
tessley
the whole crew
Kate: right
me: will be invited
Kate: of course
Sent at 5:04 PM on Monday
me: i am drafting up a summary/proposal thing
Kate: good
me: gimme a few more minutes and i'll send a copy your way to read over and see if it's cool
Kate: cool, thanks
Sent at 5:07 PM on Monday
Kate: how's it coming over there?
me: pretty good
Sent at 5:20 PM on Monday
Kate: good
good
Sent at 5:21 PM on Monday
me: alright i got one
Kate: send it over
Sent at 5:26 PM on Monday
me: ok i sent it
hey how do i copy and paste this convo?
Sent at 5:29 PM on Monday
me: should i keep the name mentioning in there?
Kate: yes
yeah
just copy the whole thng
thing
and paste it
into the email
me: ok
from what point
Kate: from the bottom up
me: starting here?
Kate: the bottom most part of the convo you want to have in there
sure
here
right
here
me: ok i'm doing it

Integrated Art History

On Sunday we discussed perhaps having an integrated art history discussion/class. I have a few ideas.
-1) ongoing discussion on the page for the facebook group for The Dance Team, so that we could contribute whenever we stumble across a thing.
-2) tag things with thedanceteam on del.icio.us when you find them. (for those of you who do not yet use del.icio.us, we should talk)
-3) weekly meetings! besides being basically my favorite thing, doing things on a regular basis makes them at least 1,004,559 times more legit than not. We could organize it as a lecture series, where people could sign up to present, even if it ends up being the same few people each time, it would be cool. It might be cool to do this in a public space, such as a library if possible. I'll look into it.
-4) here is an example of everybody playing together from the 80's, when it was acceptable to chew gum and smoke a cigarette while playing basketball.

http://www.ubu.com/film/kitchen.html

- The television production Two Moon July was a multidisciplinary event that featured experimental video, film, visual art, performance and music in a theatrical framework. More than thirty artists participated in the program, which was produced for the Kitchen by Carlota Schoolman and directed by Tom Bowes. This production reflects a moment when art centers were experimenting with new modes of presenting the arts for television. The participating artists read like a "who's who" of 1980's downtown art icons. Short excerpts from video and film works (by artists including Vito Acconci, Dara Birnbaum, Bruce Connor and Bill Viola) are intercut with performances and art installations in the Kitchen's gallery spaces. Laurie Anderson performs Difficult Listening Hour, speaking through the male voice of hher "Soul Doctor" character; Talking Heads' front man David Byrne is featured in the performance piece Report from L.A.; choreographer and dancer Bill T. Jones performs Inspiration to the accompaniment of John and Evan Lurie's music. Art works by '80s art stars Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo and Jonathan Borofsky are integral to the mise en scene, while music by downtown legends Brian Eno, Philip Glass and Arto Lindsay, among others, provides a running soundtrack.

Fish Bowl & Cigarettes: Teil Eins

This was the first enthusiastic spurt of jigsawed ideas that befell me after receiving this project. Cigarette smoke has to be the most intriguing and beautiful part of a cigarette. Produced from this small glowing tip into wisps of shadow… yes, I know it’s already been used in countless films as an artistic device: the curve and grace of it for femininity, the harsh reality of its production for masculinity.

But there’s more to it than that. It’s motion. It’s fluid mechanics. It’s a scientific device; it’s one of the few things that allow us to visualize air currents. We can see the lift that allows us to fly; we can see the backflows that da Vinci studied, which in blood closes ventricular valves. So sure, those are applications, but when I think of cigarettes, I think of the curl of smoke, and that’s caused by those same physical principles.

So a fish bowl? A container. Smoke, a fluid. Contain the smoke? I don’t know. An image of a fish bowl above a cigarette comes to mind, collecting the smoke as it nonchalantly burns low. And something clicks – this whole motion idea. The difference between motion and movement may be merely semantics, but something is there. Motion seems like movement without intention; an object can have motion, but a person creates movement. Automation. The smoke moves automatically because the factors affecting it move it. It happens as a direct result of the inputs, even if there are thousands of them: heat rising, pressures equalizing, butterfly pooping. And like every bad habit, like smoking, I’ve return to my past way of thinking about things, returned to the discussion of the last post.

For me, smoking is absolutely tied to a parentally decided ‘bad.’ “Talk to your kids about not smoking,” “Every cigarette takes three minutes off your life” and “Your dad quit smoking when he got married.” And a fish bowl – how could I escape the image of the reprimanding but futily enforcing goldfish from Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat? I’ll have to read that story again, and figure out why and how he fits in.

Back to the tangible ideas. I don’t want the cigarette to just burn, I want it to move underneath, too. I want to put it on a record player! Yeah, I’ll go to the thrift store and get one. Oh, and records, too, and fish bowls. And maybe a fish bowl on the record player, with water so that the water centrifuges outward (see sketches above). Nick Zammuto of the Books created some great rhythmic pieces with spirograph-type scratching on the inner part of records and digitally reordering them. I want to do that. Wait, automated music. Music caused by the motion and factors. Sweet, something is tying this all together. But why a record player, why was that so immediate? And halfway through checking out in a Christian-based thrift store, this comes to me:

Two starting points
should define
a line
Like orange ember tip to black eye bead
and infinite means between
but no means to an end
because they are two starting
too startling
points.
Who says the shortest distance
is the path of least resistance?
Like the swirl of smoke from filter to ceiling
the eddy of scales that enables breathing
to start
two starting
here’s to starting
Over.
