Digital Migration & Hub and Spoke

Hey folks, so I get the feeling that we're kinda sorta moving on over (moving on up!) to wordpress. The Dance Team: Chicago Squad has got some new posts about their upcoming performance, Hub and Spoke, at the Chicago Fringe Festival next week. And not just words, pictures!

So check out the new clubhouse at:

Go, Team! Miss you, Brooklyn.

Coming Together 2

It has been 2 years since last I posted, and a lot has happened since then. The Dance Team has reproduced, and now exists in Brooklyn and New York in addition to Chicago. This is neat. In Chicago, TDT is creating an evening length piece to perform in the Chicago Fringe Festival. The piece is called Hub and Spoke and I know little about it, save that it will be great and the costumes make me smile. Look forward to a post by Chris with more about the Chicagoans' doings.

Meanwhile, back in Brooklyn...

Coming Together 2 is under way. A whole new set of people so far, and a whole new set of things to explore. So far there has been a weird and satisfying emphasis on tumbling and little tricks and such. We are now 'proficient' in Aikido rolls, to say the least. We are meeting every Wednesday morning at Cooper Park in East Williamsburg at 8am. I'm taking on a little more of an explicit leader roll at the moment, but hope to crack open a can of Democracy soon enough. My ethics have gotten fuzzy since moving to NYC, but I am excited to get back down to anti-business in the most fun way possible. Hope y'all can join me as we get our feet back on solid ground. With all the sloppy love of teenagers making out for the first time,

BONEYARD

Hello Folks!

We are doing three (3) performances at the Boneyard Arts Festival in Champaign on Thursday April 16th. We have three segments, 3:30-4, 5-:530, and 6:30-7. to use the space at the corner of Neil and Main (in front of Guidos).

From 3:30-4 will be a version of "idon'twannabedefeated X 1000," which we are performing in New York on the 11th.

One of the others will be a ****10 minute**** group improvisation in which anyone may participate, just so long as they let us know (preferably by posting on The Dance Team's Facebook wall) by the day of the performance. There will be a score, and it will be a performance, not a jam. Both are cool, but they're different, and this one is the former, not the latter.

One will be a piece put together via the internets (mainly this blog). The idea is a process of decentralized authorship. Again this piece is open to all interested parties for participation, but you MUST DECLARE YOUR PARTICIPATION by APRIL 1ST at 11:59PM. The way it's going to happen is as follows:

Post a COMMENT to THIS POST by APRIL 1ST at 11:59PM. The comment should include YOUR NAME and the TITLE ONLY of a RANDOM WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE. Then everyone who has posted will vote on ONE and ONLY ONE of the articles. We will then make a work that uses that article as a jumping off point. You do not need to be in the performance, so satellite participation is possible, but the final product must include an element of live performance to be presented at Boneyard on the 16th. ****We have the space for 10 minutes.**** cheers, friends.

-love,

steve

Updating Together

Here are updates for Coming Together:

We have had the first two legit sessions. They were both wonderful. We now have 879 team spirit points, well on our way to our goal of over 9000 points. Well, how did we get here?

Session one on January 11, 2009 we got points as follows:

160 for attendance:
Chloe + 20
Kang + 10
Julia + 20
Zach + 10
Mike + 10
Al + 10
Marissa + 20
Steve + 10
Emily + 10
Lesley + 20
Jess + 20

15 for washing our feet, and Al and Jess not needing to because they are in love already and don't need to wash each others' feet before they touch them.

20 for trust flying

2 for Blue team vs. Red Team (went well, but there's a lot of room for growth)

10 for having first legit session

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS

2 for Mike for Gorilla Knucks
2 for Kang for Facing his ticklishness
3 for Toby (the cat) and our growing relationship with him

TOTAL: 214
RUNNING TOTAL: 619

Session two on January 18, 2009 we got points as following:

70 for attendance:
Kate + 10
Mike + 10
Al + 10
Lesley + 10
Marissa + 10
Jess + 10
Steve + 10

75 for a genuine laughing circle, and the evolution of that into other things

20 points for going through learning how to walk. It was not legit BMC because it was spur of the moment and I (steve) didn't remember exactly the process, but it got us up to walking, which was great. Marissa will get more involved with Body Mind Centering activities in later sessions, to the benefit of all.

35 for Al's Walking Magnets exercise, and bouncing

20 for Accumulation: the Accumulation is a sequence which we will build on. for every level we reach for the day, we will get X10 points. so today we got to level 2, so we got 20 points.

28 (14 X 2) for Extreme Value Composition exercise. (X 2 because it was buy one get one free for pistachio's at Jewel)

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS

2 for Marissa for being involved and leading our party during the accumulation
10 for Mike for the accumulation being his first "Dance Class" experience

TOTAL: 260
RUNNING TOTAL: 879

MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have developed a "lock box" system. Ok, so it's actually an Iron Man slurpee mug from 7-11. But it functions as a lock box. The new idea is for sessions to be $5 or however much you can pay (as opposed to the splitting the cost evenly idea). Money goes either directly to the people who run the space we are renting, or into the "lock box" fund. This fund will be used to pay in advance for space rental (because usually you need to pay at least a little in advance). This fund will also be used for setting up a fundraiser, eventually. And the money from that fundraiser will, likewise, go into this fund. Once we have enough money consistently in the fund, I (Steve) or a Treasurer, should anyone want to volunteer, will open a real bank account for The Dance Team. Then after a year maybe we can apply for 501(c)(3)?

Love, unless you are a customer in a retail store who not only doesn't put the clothes you don't want back, but you LEAVE THEM IN A PILE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR? what the hell people, go back to grade school if you can't figure that shit out. or better yet, go spend some time in a refugee camp.
